Skip breakfast at your own peril

I have to say I am terrible about eating breakfast.

I’m in about the 1/5 minority who generally skip breakfast.  You would think that, as an Fort Myers, FL MD, I would be more diligent about breakfast, especially after the research findings shown below .

Sixteen (16) years of tracking 27,000 older/middle aged men found that those who regularly skipped breakfast had a 30% increased risk of a heart attack or dying from heart disease than those who ate regularly.

Wow!  I guess I may have to start eating those Egg McMuffins! Not the best breakfast perhaps, but at least it is breakfast.

Maybe you're not fat; Maybe you are just a "mutant"

It seems no matter what you read in the scientific literature today you read about this gene and that gene.  Genes are everywhere – literally.

Now we may come to realize some obesity may be a genetic mutation.  A gene called MRAPZ – now, that would be a good name for a first born – when disabled caused mice to gain twice as much weight as their siblings.

It is rare in humans but may explain why some people have such a hard time losing weight.  How many people do you and I know who have a hard time losing weight?

As a Florida Plastic Surgeon, I encounter "hard losers" frequently

Hmm – maybe it is more common than we think.

Omega 3 and Prostate Cancer - Not good news

HERE WE GO AGAIN
I just visited my doctor to have my PSA (prostate specific antigen) checked and all was well.  But then I read an article that said Omega 3 fish oil can INCREASE your chance for prostate cancer.  Everyone has said the Omega 3’s  are great for you. Now, maybe not.  A new study conducted by Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center found that men who consumed large doses of Omega 3 fish oils had a 43% increased risk of developing prostate cancer.  Also the type of prostate cancer they develop is 71% more likely to be high grade which can be more fatal.  So maybe we should skip the fish oil supplement and exercise more.
